I know from talking to other stylists that this is most definitely not the way to protect and care for someone’s hair. So, after me telling the stylist at the start of the appointment that I was very careful with my hair and didn’t apply much heat, and reiterating this multiple times, to preserve its condition and integrity, I was subsequently put under direct heat for 45 minutes in total, with chemicals on my hair. This is a process that is usually undertaken at the sink. This has NEVER happened in any salon I have ever attended – there is simply no reason to put toner under heat. I was then taken back to my seat and heat was applied for a THIRD time for another 15-minute period. I was shampooed and toner was applied to my hair. When the second timer went off, I was taken to the sink for the bleach to be rinsed out. I was then placed back under the heat for a further 15 minutes. There was no care taken to prevent any overlap. She was not as meticulous as GH had been. I did not witness any conversation with GH about what volume of bleach was already on, so it is very possible that a different mixture could’ve been applied. She proceeded to add another layer of bleach over all the regrowth. Once the timer on the dryer went off, a junior stylist, Madison, came along and checked on the progress. I was initially placed under heat for 15 mins. I have never been placed under heat during any other bleach regrowth treatment I have received. This has never been the case with my hair. where the hair is really dark or doesn’t lift very easily. I have researched this and found a fair few articles where the common theme is that heat should only be used in very extreme circumstances – i.e. The common opinion of most stylists is that heat should rarely be applied to hair during the bleaching process, and NEVER on already-bleached hair. However, once all the bleach was applied to the hair, she put a plastic cap on and placed me under heat. When GH was applying the bleach to my roots, she was meticulous – I noticed her using a little tissue to wipe off any overlapping bleach. I mentioned a few times that my hair is in such good condition due to me not applying heat regularly (oftentimes, I wash it and let it try naturally). I discussed with the stylist (GH) about how I’ve been getting my hair bleached for about 3-4 years now and I am very proud of how I maintain it, using minimum heat, only washing once a week, and using highly-rated moisturising shampoo and conditioner. I don’t think there is anything wrong with questioning everything and being careful these days especially when horror stories exist. I don’t believe the author came across as snobby either, it’s that she’s confident in what she believes based on her experience and research. I appreciate it coming from a professional too. I don’t think anyone can emphasize enough nowadays to have discernment with whoever you talk to. In my opinion, this was a well-written article. There is a night and day difference between what I use and what she uses on my hair. She got my hair ash blonde with dark brown mixed with a sort of balayage look because I’ll never bleach my hair by myself. I maintain my roots and tone my hair and I go to her to bleach and streak. Finally, after more than 10 years, I’m at a place where I can go to her for services, thank God. One of the best stylists I know now generously gives me advice about what to do with my hair color on my own, so it’s great. And for sure, I’ve come across some snobby stylists with bad attitudes, but not all are like that. From what I researched, all of the advice I was getting from those particular Sally associates lined up with the professionals. I don’t have much of a choice but to use what is available at Sally’s, but I do my best to use better treatments and conditioners after I dye my hair. I’ve had a couple of mistakes within 10 years of DIY, but overall, I’ve had good results lightening my hair from black to brown, to blonde, to brown again, without ever using bleach or destroying my hair. Unlike some people walking into Sally’s, I guess, I trust no one so I would hear the advice of someone from Sally’s and then look up like crazy what I could have from professional stylists and videos from professionals about the proper way of doing things. I’m a non-professional who only started dying my jet-black virgin hair on my own just before I turned 30 from Sally’s products because I was in bad financial shape, but I wanted to have some color on my 30-year-old head. I’m coming in a few years late with this article.
